Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) was established under Food Safety & Standards Act in 2006. This authority lays down the standards to regulate the manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale and import of food articles. The main aim of this authority is to ensure that the quality food products reach the public.
It is mandatory to obtain NOC For Import from FSSAI before importing any food article to India. Strict penalties are applicable incase the FSSAI standards are not followed. Though there are strict regulations laid down by the authority, but the safety of food articles is still under doubt.
FSSAI has been issued a legal notice by CCFI over the misuse ‘organic’ certificate. During a research by the CFFI it was found that there are many organic brands that are misusing the certificate and logo issued by the FSSAI. Even though the Food Licensing & Registration In India has been made mandatory, there are lots of loopholes in the system.
There are many cases where FSSAI has been taking immediate actions. For e.g. it has ordered a ban on the manufacture of several energy drinks in the country in the best interest of the public.
Despite of all the actions taken by the authority, the problem of safety of food products in India still remains unsolved.
